A Legacy That Inspires Us!
The investiture of Maui's King and Queen and their royal court was on August 12th, 2000. The ceremony began at 5:00 AM with an ocean cleansing and ceremony.. not open to the public. At 9:00 at the Pi'ilani Heiau in Paukakalo the king and queen prepared to be crowned with an awa ceremony. The crowning took place in Wailuku at the War Memorial Gymnasium.
The Moi (King)
Lennie Kameleonalani Moikeha Pokipala. Lennie is a direct descendent of the legendary Chief Moikeha. He was the
greatest sea navigator of all Polynesia during 1000AD. His lineage was the ruling dynasty of what is now Hawaii; before the Kamehama Monarchy (about1793-1893). There is an exhibit at the Maui Ocean Center about Chief Moikeha.
Lennie's mother, Glorian Moikeha Akau, is very knowledgable on ancient Hawaiian history as her family geneolgy is very much a part of that. The Moikeha chant is documented at the University of Hawaii. She is also involved in Aloha Festivals. She was the 1972 Queen. Her daughter, Nani, was queen last year of Oahu and will hand her crown to her sister Kaui for this coming year. Three Moikeha descendents are privledged to rein in Aloha Festivals at the same time. Any mother would be proud of that! Aloha Festivals is an opportunity to remember the Hawaiian Culture as it was and no longer is.
