FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I have to hire a separate minister, or can Rev Michael perform my ceremony?
A: Rev Michael is included in all Special Packages, and will perform your ceremony. You may request a Hawaiian minister, for an additional fee, who will perform your ceremony, with Hawaiian chants, blowing of conch shell and Hawaiian prayers, in the traditional Hawaiian style. Rev Michael still attends your ceremony, to help with onsite coordination and to conduct the sand ceremony and provide music if music has been added to your package.

Q: Can I add to the written ceremony?
A: Rev Michael does not alter or add to his individual passages, as he has them mostly memorized, and additional edit work for such customization can become very time consuming. He prefers to stay with his ceremony, as is. However, you are welcome to request additional passages, that are listed below the ceremony, such as "friendship" or "Corinthians" etc. You are also welcome to recite some other passages personally to each other or to your wedding party, or recite personal vows to each other: (reading from a paper is okay - JJ usually takes a picture of the paper being held as you recite, and it looks great in your photo gallery). Just keep in mind (for sunset ceremonies) that we should try to keep the extra passages to just a few minutes, as we will be wanting to capture all of the great sunset pictures after the ceremony, and we do not want to extend the length of the ceremony too much, or we lose the light. But most of all, it is your day, so let us know if you would like to add something.

Q: What is the best time to start a sunset wedding?
A: The best time is at least an hour BEFORE sunet. Why? Because after your approximately 20 minute ceremony, you will be signing the license, keepsake certificate and then doing sunset pictures and video. If you are having cake or toasting, you will want to begin an hour and a half before sunset. Sunset Times

Q: Do I Need Witnesses?
A: No, you are not required to have witnesses for a Hawaii marriage ceremony. All you need is a minister licensed by the state of Hawaii to perform the ceremony and complete and sign the license. After your ceremony, your minister will have you sign your license. Then, he/she will sign it, complete the necessary information and send it to the state for processing. In all of our Special packages, JJ is present as photographer and enjoys signing as witness, if it is just the two of you.

Q: Can we request Reverend Michael to wear white in our ceremony?
Yes, Rev Michael has the following shirts: white long sleeve aloha, black long sleeve dress, blue & purple long sleeve Hawaiian.

Q: What is the best beach location you will recommend?
A: South Side Maui, White Rock Beach & Po'olenalena is excellent. Here is a map with our preferred beaches: Map of Best South Maui Beaches

Q: Will there be a problem if we commission an additional photographer our friend recommended?
A: Sorry, we do not work with other outside photographers with our Special Packages. It is not professional, as each photographer has their own style & technique. It is not appropriate for anyone, guest or additional photographer, to shoot over a professional photographer's shoulder. Some photographers will use associate photographers, who work for them and assist them as assistants. That is not really needed for a beach wedding, unless you are contracting for a deluxe, extended photo package from JJ. --- You are welcome to hire your own photographer and have them shoot the ceremony instead of JJ, no problem, we are not offended at all, it is your day and you are welcome to do that. There would be no reduction in price of the package however, and JJ still joins Rev Michael to assist in on-site coordination.

Q: How far are the wedding locations from Lahaina, Ka'anapali, Kahana, Kapalua?
A: It takes about an hour to travel south, down the scenic coast highway, to reach the South Maui area. If you are hiring a limo, best to give yourself at least 3 total hours of limo rental, one to travel down, one for the ceremony, one to travel back. Four hours would give you a little extra time, if you are doing a big photo package or want a more relaxed time schedule.

Q: What happens when it rains?
A: South Maui is the driest part of the island. That is why we perform our ceremonies here --- See Map --- Of course, we cannot guarantee "no rain". We can offer to postpone your ceremony, should we have rain, to a date and time, based on our availability, for no extra charge. Most coordinators do not offer to postpone for no additional charge.

Q: Can I choose the flowers?
A: You can let JJ know what color scheme and types you prefer, however, flowers are seasonal, and we provide as close as we can to what you are wanting.

Q: What are the days and hours to get our license?
A: Monday thru Friday, all agents are available, Saturday some are available, Sunday, most are closed. We provide you with agents' contact information, so that you can set up an appointment with them.
